The idea behind employment is not only to earn a living but to also acquire a skill that will benefit you.
This was admirable about the great efforts from Kang’agetei sub location when a mixed team of locals laborers and skilled construction workers from Turkana Basin Insititute (TBI) and other men and women from the community came together to set the foundation of a classroom that would serve the Standard one pupils.
The efforts to have the younger children attend class and later on, two to three years later get moved to Nakwaperit is an ideal way of acting as a feeder school thus not having too many schools and no infrastructure or human capital to support the schools.
Seeing young men who when first employed at TBI could not hold a hammer be able to work with such skill like their the experiences "fundis", take accurate measurements, and participate in the set up of the foundation on Sunday which is their typical rest day and with pride state that they are all coming together to give a better future to their children was quite remarkable.
The efforts to give both a skill and exposure to a people to recognize that while they may not have recieved an education, they can using the skills they have acquired give their children an opportunity to recieve an education and a probable better future. The sight of people working together to give the children a classroom was the best holiday gift i could ever have.
