Hi, I’m Melina, a sophomore from Stony Brook University. I’m interested mainly in archaeology and came to TBI for the amazing experience.
Two Sundays ago we went to Eliye Springs for a well-deserved break. We started out after lunch for an afternoon of swimming at Lake Turkana. Tom, our resident pet, looked so sad as we were about to leave that we decided to bring her with us. Little did we know then that she does not enjoy being in the lorry and was subsequently terrified the entire ride to the Springs. She was very nervous the whole ride there and was very thankful when we arrived.
Lake Turkana is a beautiful place. There was a nice beach and most people got in the water right away. Some people took a little longer to make sure their sunscreen had time to set in. The water was perfect and felt amazing in the hot temperature of this semi-arid grazing land we live in. We had a lot of fun playing in the water. People had handstand competitions in which Ned was the ultimate winner, as well as other water games. Unfortunately, Tom did not enjoy the visit as much and wouldn’t go into the water without some serious coercion.
Some people decided to go get a cold refreshing soda from the little restaurant. After just over an hour of swimming as a group we decided to go visit the marketplace where lots of women were selling their handmade crafts. Francis, one of our trip coordinators, was kind enough to help make sure we got the best deal.
In the end everyone was really happy with their purchases. After a quick break to gather our things, it was time to head back to TBI. Tom was less than thrilled to have to get back in the lorry. In the end, everyone including Tom made it back happy, safe and sound.
