As livelihood decisions are strategic and dynamic, TBI’s involvement in this regard has led to the realization of increased opportunities for access to, and control over, use of local resources. It has also led to capacity strengthening and to members of the community making use of those opportunities for subsistence and/or income generating purposes.

Partnerships with local government
There have been initiatives for public participation in which TBI has strongly contributed towards. One such initiative took place at Namortung’a site in Kalokol which involved the Turkana County Government, National Museums of Kenya (NMK) Officials, TBI Officials, the local administrators and the community at large. During this occasion, the NMK sought to gazette this historical site for protection. The outcome was successful with the community members giving consent to NMK. These partnerships are important for the broader protection and curation of heritage sites across the region.
TBI has also hosted members of the local county government including the Marsabit County Governor Mohamud M. Ali – Abshiro who visited the Research center at Ileret in 2021. During this visit, the governor toured the labs, hydroponics garden, plastic environmental conservation efforts, water and energy projects, giving positive remarks on the institute and encouraging other county executives in Kenya to visit the establishment.
