TBI’s ongoing success requires the support and participation of local communities in the areas in which we work. Our extensive and long-term support in education, health and livelihoods has an immediate beneficial impact and also provides a platform through which we share information in order to build a robust understanding of TBI’s mission and the significance of the science being conducted. The main objective of TBI’s Community Development Program is to empower local communities to foster a thriving and sustainable future for the region.

Research And Community
The Daasanach and Gabbra communities inhabit the east side of the lake while the Turkana are found on the west. These communities derive their livelihoods largely from natural resources; mainly livestock with limited fishing and agriculture. However, climate change and especially increased climate variability is amplifying existing pressures, exacerbating the impact of decades of marginalization. We aim to provide support that mitigates these issues, through programs informed by community members and committees.
The local communities make up 80% of the workforce at TBI’s field stations, and extensive capacity building has been conducted to ensure members of the local communities are involved in key activities. These include everything from fossil hunting and preparation, to management and hydroponic farming.
