Education is critical to empowering all members of communities to thrive in our increasingly connected world. It is vital to enabling people to pursue diverse careers, ultimately shaping and enriching the development of entire communities. However, the long term marginalization of the communities with whom we work has resulted in low literacy rates, especially among women. This marginalization has manifested itself through insufficient and poorly resourced schools, resulting in children having to travel large distances and not receiving quality education once at school. These barriers are compounded by other factors such as reluctance to educate girls and general poverty of local communities.
TBI’s primary contribution in education is through scholarships. Between 2019 and 2021, TBI has supported 416 students in the high school scholarship program on both sides of the lake.
TBI offers general support to local primary schools on an as needed basis. This includes payment of salaries to teachers, water supply and improvement of infrastructure. TBI also supports adult learning as it runs an adult school in the Ileret camp and has a partnership with the local Catholic mission in order to run community adult educational sessions.
TBI is proud to have been associated with the facilitation of education for several students in the community and presently, there is a growing number of candidates who have completed primary and tertiary education with some even attending colleges and university, thereafter returning to work within the community.
In addition to directly supporting academic education, TBI also contributes to the broader learning of students in the region. These activities include professional development through mentorship programs, menstrual hygiene support, science clubs, and educational trips to TBI facilities.
